Steel Mills

Steel mills water treatment carry high heat loads, include impurities and use a lot of water, so they are one of the most important facilities in water treatment.

The closed cooling systems that does not have product contact (Electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, continuous casting machine etc.) and the open cooling systems that have product contact (Rolling mill spray, CCM spray, sedimentation ponds etc.) should be reviewed differently.

What we generally observe in these facilities are that, not by only changing the chemical treatment but also by having mechanical and operational revisions, the facilities are able to make big savings.

Power Plants

Besides the HRSG and OTSG generated CCPPs, there is also a large number of coal fired power plants in Turkey. These high pressurized boiler systems require pure demi water. The steam turbines are highly valuable equipments designed with restricted operating limits, thus making the boiler water treatment very critical.

In addition to all this, the condenser and cooling water treatment design need to be upkept in order to provide the necessary cooling and vacum of the condenser. Incomplete and/or wrong treatment in the cooling tower, may bring a high payback as chemical and water consumption cost.

Air Separation Plants

The Oxygen facilities are critical equipments where the cooling water and the product are in contact and therefore pressure, flow rate adjustments are followed neatly.

The organic and inorganic actives of the chemical treatment program are essential to be monitored carefully, in order to avoid technical complications. The water consumption may also be quite high in these cooling towers.

  • Cooling systems of the Air separation unit

Chemical Plants

Chemical plants in hold specific chemical productions that water systems are in touch with.Exchangeable heatloads/ cooling water loops, sudden and/or constant heat amounts in the reactors can cause acute and chronic troubles. The correct technical approach is critical to avoid downtime and/or production efficiency of the plant.

Water Production Plants

In todays world, water production by reverse osmosis is popular. In these systems, UF systems may be used upstream as pre-treatment. Either as drinking water applications or industrial water use; correct membrane selection, accurate operating conditions (Pressure, flow rate, temperature), proper chemical treatment and filtration creates big differences in overall cost and plant efficacy.

SYSTEMS

Evaporative (Cooling Tower) and Closed Cooling Systems

In all facilities that need cooling, open evaporative cooling systems and/or closed-circuit cooling systems are used depending on the required cooling capacity.

Cooling towers remove the high thermal load by evaporating the circulating water. In these systems, significant amount of water is consumed. Concentration number, which refers to how much salinity the cooling water may withstand due to the high evaporation rate, is very important. This parameter depends on the technology and knowledge of the chemical companies. Working at the highest concentration number possible without causing scale, corrosion, fouling and microbiological fouling provides great benefits to the facilities. Both the water cost and the chemical cost are reduced.

On the other hand, closed circuit cooling are systems with no evaporation and are cooled by heat exchangers. In these systems, where plate type heat exchangers are generally dominant, the quality of water must be carefully designed, because plate type heat exchangers are more prone to clogging. These systems are treated more easily, but if the correct treatment is not chosen, problems may occur gradually over time. Equipments, pipings and heat exchangers may be damaged. Once the problem is felt, its already late and the solutions bring significant costs. In particular, microbiological problems... In these systems, the characteristics of the make-up water and the type of chemicals used must be compatible.

HRSG, OTSG and Industrial Type Boiler Systems

Yüksek basınçlı HRSG (drum tipli) ve OTSG (tek geçişli) kazan sistemleri, elektrik santrallerinde yoğunlukla kullanılmaktadır. Endüstriyel tipte, özellikle su borulu kazanlar, genel endüstri fabrikalarında tercih edilmektedir.

HRSG and OTSG systems are boiler systems that require ultrapure feed water, where quality and purity are important in treatment chemicals, and are controlled by strict limits. Especially OTSG… In these systems, it is very important that all system equipment, not just chemicals, work correctly. (Deaerator, condenser, demi-plant, drums, measuring instruments, etc.)

Incorrect treatment increases the risk and may cause unexpected downtime and damage the steam turbine. Boiler pipes may be damaged and even the system may be out of warranty. Industrial type boilers can operate with more flexible water characteristics due to more tolerant limits put by the vendors. (Cation conductivity, specific conductivity, drum and steam pH values, etc.) However, these systems, which are given less importance in our country, are treated in a very costly and technically at risk by many novice chemical suppliers.

Sea, Surface, Well Water UF-RO Systems

UF and RO systems are systems that require close monitoring. Chemicals used in RO systems and pretreatment (UF or other alternatives) are of great importance. In RO systems, we see more errors spread over time that gradually give damage, rather than major errors that may stop production in short time. Eventually, this damage results in membrane replacement.

However, with the right treatment and field analysis, we can see that the RO membrane life in these plants exceeds 10 years. Even under difficult water characteristics and operating conditions, the minimum target of 5 years membrane change frequency can be easily set.

UF facilities are chemically more comfortable facilities. There is not much chemical diversity. However, it should be well managed mechanically and operationally. Damage to UF membranes should be prevented and washing times should be chosen correctly.

Sedimentation and Waste Water Treatment Systems

Waste water systems may be found in all factories such as steel plants, chemistry, textile, food industry factories, both in needs of environmental protection and water recovery. What we observe is, the prebuilt mechanical and operational characteristics are not revised by changing pollution and water characteristics in time. For waste and sludge production in the facility, chemical applications and recommendations of chemical suppliers come forward. However, revisions on water flow scheme and process helps in solving many issues. As Ata Mühendislik, we first carry out mechanical and operational controls in wastewater treatment systems, as in every facility and system. Afterwards, we try to achieve the most efficient result with chemical treatment optimization.

It must be pointed out that; in the entire water treatment sector, only in the waste water treatment, patented, high quality organic polymers make a good difference compared to standard commodity products. Therefore, with low dosage and high unit price of these newly developed organic polymers result in more economical and technically better results than commodity products (Iron 3 chloride, Ferric 3 sulfate, PAC etc.) which are applied as low unit price and high dosage. It should be noted that these inorganic commodity products also increase solid waste and this waste load is quite costly.
